Gay funnyman Leslie Jordan returns to Atlanta for ‘Stories I Can’t Tell Mama’

Lily Tomlin gave gay comic Leslie Jordan some sage advice not long ago about his one man shows across the country. She told him no one cared about the sets he often brings along with him – what they wanted to see is him simply tell his stories. He returns to Mixx on Thursday to do just that with his new show, “Stories I Can’t Tell Mama.” As he was picking material for his latest appearance in the ATL, Jordan thought about the notion he’s had for a while – that gay men just eventually become their mothers. Using… >>

Eddie Owen no longer with Eddie’s Attic

Eddie Owen announced on his Facebook page Monday morning that he was fired over the weekend from the venue that bears his name. The legendary Atlanta venue owner-promoter hasn’t owned the music hall in nearly a decade, but has always remained involved. In December, Owen agreed to a handshake deal with new owners Alex Cooley and Dave Mattingly to manage and book both Eddie’s Attic and Owen’s new venture, Eddie Owen Presents at the Red Clay Theatre in Duluth. On his Facebook posting, originally publicized by Richard Eldredge at Atlanta Magazine Monday morning, Owen simply said, “Won’t be going… >>

NBC 2012 13 schedule features two servings of ‘The Voice,’ four nights with comedies

Matthew Perry is trying his second sitcom on NBC since “Friends” ended. The last, “Mr. Sunshine,” didn’t stick with ABC. CREDIT: AP NBC this fall is doubling down on “The Voice” and comedies, adding new time slots for sitcoms Tuesdays and Fridays. Meanwhile, “The Biggest Loser” and “Celebrity Apprentice” next season are placed on a diet. Most broadcast reality programs (”Dancing With the Stars,” “The Amazing Race,” “Survivor”) have two runs so it’s not surprising NBC is taking its biggest non-sports program “The Voice” and carting it out twice. Fox has resisted placing  “American Idol” on… >>

Alton Brown joins ‘Food Network Star,’ going through ‘Good Eats’ withdrawal

Alton Brown is still going through “Good Eats” withdrawal. The Atlanta food maestro retired his quirky Food Network show last fall after 13 years and 252 episodes. “It’s difficult to let go,” Brown said in a phone interview this week from New York. “When one decides to put a stop to a life’s work, you kind of float in a funny state for a while. I’m working on it.” Not that Brown is sitting in his Atlanta office eating bonbons all day. He continues to host “Iron Chef America” in New York and “The Next Iron Chef” in Los Angeles… >>

Travel: Florida or bust

Travel: Florida or bust

A road trip to Florida over the Memorial Day holiday weekend has become an annual tradition for LGBT people in the South. The coastal oil spill scare of 2010 seems to be long forgotten as visitors continue to make the trek and pack the beaches and bars. The tradition of gays gathering in Pensacola for the holiday used to be male-oriented, but women’s parties have become so prevalent, they actually compete against each other over the jam-packed weekend. Owners of the Atlanta-based lesbian bar My Sister’s Room are involved in one of the premiere Pensacola parties, Sexacola Beach… >>
