Gay Hall County businessman killed in robbery

David Sanchez, 46, of Gainesville, Ga., died Thursday at Northeast Georgia Medical Center from injuries sustained in a robbery. Sanchez, who was openly gay according to his friend Greg Bautista, was shot while outside Victory Processing plant  on Memorial Park Drive in Gainesville. The Gainesville Times reports the Hall County Sheriff’s Department said that Sanchez was with a woman when they were forced out of their car and then multiple shots were fired. >>

The Georgia General Assembly ended its annual 40-day session March 29, leaving two LGBT bills on the table. State Rep. Rashad Taylor (D-Atlanta), who is gay, introduced a hate crime bill on the last day of the session. Taylor announced he would introduce the bill back in February, while speaking at a rally to protest the beating of Brandon White by gang members in southwest Atlanta who repeatedly called him “faggot.” A video of the beating went viral and made national headlines. Documents released by the city of Atlanta show that the city paid out more than $1.2 million for an independent investigation into the botched raid of the Atlanta Eagle. The documents show that high-profile law firm Greenberg Traurig charged the city more than $1.2 million for its three-month investigation and 349-page report of what happened at the Eagle the night of Sept. 10, 2009, when the gay bar was raided by the Atlanta Police Department after anonymous allegations about illegal sex and drug use at the bar. Atlanta Police officials are calling a photo emailed to a local TV station of a framed picture of “CHiPS” star Erik Estrada with the phrase “You’re a homo” written on the picture a “sick joke” possibly meant to embarrass the APD. The Atlanta Pride Committee has begun announcing the schedule for June’s Stonewall events, geared to commemorating the 1969 riots at the Stonewall Inn, where patrons of the gay bar fought back against harassment from New York City police. Bond denied for suspect in Atlanta anti-gay beating

Christopher Cain, 18, one of the men accused in the attack of a gay Atlanta man in February was denied bond this morning in Fulton County Superior Court. Judge T. Jackson Bedford denied bond for Cain, saying Cain was a danger to the community. It was also noted that Cain was on five-year probation before the Feb. 4 attack on Brandon White for burglary. Cain was arrested Feb. 11 and charged with aggravated assault and robbery. Three others have also been charged in the assault. WABE report: City paid more than $1.2 million in attorneys fees into Eagle investigation

The city of Atlanta turned over 150 pages of bills to WABE today showing that the city paid $1,233,853 in attorneys’ fees to Greenberg Traurig, the law firm that completed a lengthy investigation into the botched 2009 raid. Greenberg Traurig charged between $75 to $395 per hour for attorneys’ services, WABE reports . The Greenberg Traurig report , issued on June 28, 2011, showed that many of the allegations the patrons made against officers, including rough treatment and the violations of their constitutional rights, were indeed true. >>
