Friday Riffs: Your favorite Jackson 5 song could net you a DVD

70dbJACKSON 5 CARTOON DVD BLU RAY SET 244x300 Friday Riffs: Your favorite Jackson 5 song could net you a DVD

Come on, admit it, you spent more than a few Saturday mornings back in the day watching “The Jackson 5ive” cartoon series. Maybe you caught it in its original run in the early ‘70s, or maybe you’re from the Michael Jackson-as-solo-star era and watched the show when it was rebroadcast in 1984-85 to capitalize on Michael’s popularity. Well, the entire series, including 46 remastered songs (and yes, “ABC,” “I’ll Be There” and “The Love You Save” are among them) has just been released on Blu-Ray and DVD, and thanks to our friends at Morris + King… >>

Meet “Beautiful Creatures” cast members tonight

42cdimage003 202x300 Meet “Beautiful Creatures” cast members tonight

In a small town full of teen angst, a spooky new student shows up at the high school. A little pasty but eerily attractive, the student hails from a quirky family that tends to keep to itself. Weird stuff starts happening and soon a love triangle emerges. We’re talking about “Beautiful Creatures,” the original new supernatural teen movie coming out Feb. 14. Two of the cast members, Zoey Deutch (”Emily”) and Thomas Mann (”Link”) will meet and greet fans at 6:30 p.m. tonight at the Perimeter Mall area Barnes & Noble. The event will feature movie clips, gift bags and… >>

Best hot dogs

3703hotdog.0616A Best hot dogs

Photo: Renee Brock / Special It’s an iconic American food, often mentioned in the same sentence with apple pie and baseball. And we can be very particular about our hot dogs. Should they have ketchup? Is mustard a must? What about chili, sauerkraut or slaw? Then there are the Chicago dogs, dragged through the garden with their pickle relish, peppers, tomatoes and celery salt. Frankly, the possible combinations seem endless. But we’re looking for wieners, um, winners! We want to hear about the best hot dogs in town. Tell us about your favorite place to grab a hot dog in and… >>

New Kids on the Block team with 98 Degrees and Boyz II Men for tour

9397NKOTB New Kids on the Block team with 98 Degrees and Boyz II Men for tour

Do they still have the right stuff? Photo: ThePackage-Tour.com Get ready, ladies. The guys in New Kids on the Block, 98 Degrees and Boyz II Men are bringing you their package(s) this summer. The three ’80s-‘90s hitmakers are joining together for “The Package Tour,” launching May 31 and running through July 13. The tour has a date penciled in for Philips Arena on June 20 (amusingly, the day before the current princes of teen heartthrob mania – One Direction – play the venue). Tickets go on sale Feb. 2 (an American Express pre-sale begins Jan. 25) via Ticketmaster… >>

Ed Sheeran captivates sold-out Tabernacle crowd

effcStar94JingleJam.1213B Ed Sheeran captivates sold out Tabernacle crowd

Ed Sheeran at last month’s Jingle Jam concert (though he wore the same T-shirt at last night’s Tabernacle show). Photo: Robb D. Cohen / www.RobbsPhotos.com With zero fanfare, Ed Sheeran strolled out onstage. As he plowed into “Give Me Love,” his only accompaniments his acoustic guitar, a looping mic and pedal and a wall of speakers that doubled as projection screens, the British heartthrob was bombarded with a cascade of shrieking usually reserved for the high-cheekboned glamour of One Direction. Yes, the ginger-headed singer-songwriter with the colorful sleeve tattoo, rumpled pants and T-shirt… >>

Ellie Goulding lights up a sold-out Tabernacle

Ellie Goulding…not about to sneeze, but to sing. Photo Credit: Robb D. Cohen/ www.RobbsPhotos.com The second the houselights dropped, the chanting began as if at a pep rally. “El-lie. El-lie. El-lie.” The sprite-like Ellie Goudling might not possess the vocal prowess of Adele or Emeli Sande or some of her other U.K. peers, but she’s clearly tapped into something that speaks to legions of twentysomethings – including the 2,500 or so at Friday’s sold-out Tabernacle show, the third date of her U.S. tour. It didn’t matter if you could barely… >>

Mick Jagger, Brian Grazer behind James Brown biopic

Brown in 2005. Photo: AP A James Brown biopic is finally happening sometime…soon. With none other than super producer Brian Grazer (“Apollo 13,” “8 Mile,” “Parenthood,” “Friday Night Lights”) and Mick Jagger at the helm, the project, which has been in limbo since the late ‘90s, is set to begin casting…soon. In a new interview in Rolling Stone , Deana Brown-Thomas, one of Brown’s seven children, says her father was “intrigued but wary” of a movie based on his life, since it would inevitably spotlight the unsavory moments.  But after years of legal wrangling over Brown’s property… >>

Friday Riffs: Tailgating songs for Sunday

What I really wanted to do this week was cultivate a playlist of game day songs relating to falcons. That thought started and ended with Billy Falcon’s semi-hit from 1991, “Power Windows.” Who knew that falcons were in such short lyrical supply? So instead I asked some friends and Twitter followers for their best tailgating song suggestions and received some familiar – but always good for the adrenaline – responses: Queen’s “We Will Rock You”; AC/DC’s “For Those About To Rock (We Salute You); Beastie Boys, “(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (to Party)”; .38 Special’s “Hold on Loosely… >>
